: Did anybody ever wonder why the orcs didn't smell the hobbits when they had to march with them through the black lands. There are several references in the book to the orcs smelling out their enemies and their good sense of smell. When a being exerts energy ( such as marching fast ) than their oder also increases. Two hobbits wearing smelly orc armor, marching in column of sweaty smelly orcs, might be difficult to detect. Also consider was happening. The orcs were indeed marching fast, and being pushed to continue moving. Even if a random few orcs did detect a strange smell, would they stop moving, look around and say "hey fellows, I smell a strange smell"? I doubt it, because it would just be a strange smell, these orcs had never smelled hobbit scent and there would be no reason to think the strange smell was an enemy.
