: Actually, I think Tolkien had a specific English raid upon the Spanish Armada in mind when he wrote about that, but I can't recall the specifics. I think it might have been a raid on Calais. Except the English didn't attack the quays. They sent burning ships into the harbor because the Spanish were packed in so tightly. They damaged quite a few ships, as I recall, and some sort of panic set in (and these ships had slaves on them, too). The year before the first Spanish armada sailed for England, Francis Drake led a few ships and attaced the Spanish fleat in the quays of Cadiz. He destroyed and damaged several ships, but what proved the best thing he did there was that he destroyed a warehouse foll of barrels for water. So when the Spanish armada sailed they had to use fresh wood in their water barrels witch ruined the water. This sounds similar to Thorongils raid. Prehaps the corsairs didn't run away from the dead, but some guy found a small river nearby. Maglor
