You know perhaps he was just bing Gimli. He was prone to exageration. Remember when they came out of Moria and went to look at the Mirrormere? He said don't drink from it. It is icy cold. Now I have to tell you. I like water just at the point of freezing. I knew an old farmer once who told me he had never tasted ice water until he was an adult and he didn't like anything less ever after. My point is characters in a book might say anything, they don't necessarly know what we know and they don't have to be rational especially in the heat of battle. Maybe Gimli couldn't come up with better words just at that momement to express exactly how he felt.
