: Maybe he needed a steady air supply for sustained combustion. Ventilation in the halls of Moria was pretty good. In the lower caverns, a Balrog might burn up available oxygen in a very short time.

The flame of a Balrog seems more of a supernatural flamelike effect, not an actual flame.
Just a thought.
