: : There's art, and there's entertainment. Art can be entertaining, sure, but I think to qualify as art it has to appeal to something more than the lowest common denominator.: Well there's lowest common denominator and then there's rubbish like Mark Rothko and Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin (I could go on but I won't). One man's art is another man's dirty bedlinen. : But yes, something can provide entertainment to many and yet be totally devoid of ny artistic merit whatsoever. But who is to judge? Precisely. And providing entertainment is generally a good thing. My husband was watching sitcoms last night, and i sort of half-watched one where a man saw his wife cheat at a board game and stressed over whether he could trust her. Fun. But it wasn't "Othello" by any stretch. It was a situation that a lot of people might be able to identify with, but it barely scratched the surface of any deeper meaning than a small problem between two individuals. I dunno, I'm still trying to work out the concept from this morning.... : : : De gustibus non est disputandum : : "You can't argue taste"? : : Ilien : You can't argue about taste (De gustibus). It loosly translates into the modern phrase "There's no accounting for taste" : Gungnir My Latin is pretty much what can be picked up from English words with Latin roots, along with what little I remember of high school Spanish. At least I was in the ballpark! Ilien
