In addition to Sauron and Saruman, the Noldor had some rather severe problems related to hubris. I think that the passage where Aule offers up the fathers of the Dwarves to Iluvatar to do as he wished is one of the most significant occurences of the entire mythology. How might the fortunes of the Noldor have been different if they had learned that lesson?
