: I was under the (apparently misconceived) impression that the : elf leading the survivors was named Glorfindel?Glorfindel led the rearguard. In "The Fall of Gondolin", when a Balrog leaped over his soldiers, he was all that stood between the creature and the women and children they were guarding. : I also believe that the lack of reused elven names stems from : a common trait of reusing names within lineages and since elves : do not really die (or at least only rarely) their names cannot : be reused. The Elves reused names. But most of the Elves who are named in the histories are great kings and princes, and it was (apparently) a custom (among the Eldar, at least) that they did not bestow the names of great leaders upon their children.
