: : Not all academics shun Tolkien. My original exposure to Middle Earth came in an English class in junior high. I subsequently took an excellent class on Tolkien at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

: Interesting...
: I was not aware that Tolkien was being introduced in grade-school. Perhaps this seems so because I was educated in a British society. Perhaps he is not being shunned by all academics (just most of those of his country).

: Maedhros

Oh, he is being shunned, believe me. I am in academia. Literature department on top of that! Old and Middle English on top of that. He is shunned due almost entirely to popularity and a lack of understanding by academics who do not understand that it is more than a fairy tale. Rice Univ., Univ. of Vermont (great place) and a number of the small liberal arts colleges are the place to find him. Or in my classroom!
