: I still think Mount Gundabad would be a good emblem for Bolg. Curiously enough, I had the same idea. I pictured a red banner with the silhouette of Mount Gundabad in black, surmounted by a black crown - perhaps bordered in cloth-of-gold. Then it occured to me that Bolg probably wasn't from Gundabad, but rather from Moria (like his father). Mount Gundabad was considered the northern capital of the orcs, and although Tolkien makes no mention of it, there must have been some sort of king or High King of the Goblins who dwelled there. That Bolg's army approached Erebor from the north was probably just coincidence (this would have been Gandalf's preferred route were it not for the threat of the goblins), assuming his army was composed of goblins from the northern Misty Mountains and the southern face of the Grey Mountains. Perhaps he even went first to Mount Gundabad to ask the blessing (permission) of the goblin-king before undertaking his attack. |
