: The lines of descent of the House of Finwe are spelled out
: clearly enough in The Silmarillion, but should you
: choose to ignore them then you must also admit that Maedhros,
: Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras were
: never stated to have been the sons of Feanor; Fingon,
: Turgon and Aredhel were never stated to have been the
: children of Fingolfin; and Orodreth was never stated to
: have been the son of Finarfin. By that logic, Finrod, Angrod
: and Aegnor are the only princes of the Noldor ever
: stated to have existed (by Galadriel). So, who was the
: father of Gil-galad: Finrod, Angrod or Aegnor? And where in
: The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings is this
: "stated"?

Christopher Tolkien has shown where The Silmarillion is wrong because of editorial changes, deletions, or additions he made throughout The History of Middle-earth.

He has done a pretty thorough job of repudiating The Silamrillion as any sort of "canonical" source of information.
