: : : Gil-galad is Fingon's son. If HoME contains passages which say otherwise, they do not supercede the published narrative. If Tolkien changed his mind concerning the Geneaologies, then he should have included those changes in a revised edition of LotR. Otherwise, Gil-galad remains the son of Fingon.

: : You do realize of course that nothing JRR Tolkien ever published states Fingon is the father of Gil-galad? Neither the LOTR nor The Hobbit ever states Gil-galad's parentage.

: In Unfinished Tales (by J. R. R. Tolkien) there is the letter of Gil-galad to Tar-Meneldur which begins:

: 'Ereinion Gil-galad son of Fingon to Tar-Meneldur of the line of Earendil...'

: The book was published by CT, but the essays were purely Tolkien's work.

That was an editorial change by CJRT. As he states in PoME, Shobboleth of Feanor at page 351: "...the original has 'Finellach Gil-galad of the House of Finarfin'"

CJRT admits that the only textual basis for him making Gil-galad the son of Fingon in the published Silmarillion is a single pencilled note in the margins of the Grey Annals text. That's it.

All subsequent and prior writings (except for two very early passages that have him as a Feanorean) have Gil-galad coming from the House of Finarfin - either as son of Finrod or as son of Orodreth.
