First, let me say that I have no opinion on this issue, but I do have a question: if the Balrog of Moria has wings, why doesn't he just fly across the chasm, why does he need to use the bridge, why does he fall when Gandalf breaks the bridge? (Yes, I know that's three questions in one, but if Gollum can fit two riddles in one, I can try to go him one better!)There are birds with wings that don't fly, or who can fly but prefer not to. It is possible that there wasn't room in the chasm for the Balrog to fully spread his wings once the fall began...
