Good work, Michael. I think you have won me over.

But you have missed the only real evidence in the LotR that Balrogs had wings. I consider the Moria description to ambiguous to use as evidence. But the reaction of the Fellowship to the Flying Nazgul (they thought it was a Balrog) is undeniable. Clearly what they saw of the Balrog suggested to them it could fly, it must have had wings.
