: : A very valid point, but on the other hand there's nothing to : : indicate it wasn't hunched over either, and as Jan has pointed : : out, the words "drew itself up to a great height" could mean : : that the balrog did indeed stand fully erect. Who's to say that : : Balrogs weren't knuckle draggers (so to speak)? :): Since there are no machine guns mentioned in the text, most people assume there are no machine guns in Middle-earth. It's generally best NOT to assume something was a certain way just because the text failed to say it was that way. : So, this crouching Balrog leaped across the flaming fissure just so that it could continue to run crouched until it reached the bridge. Those must have been pretty heavy wings after all, and clearly we now know why the Balrog didn't fly in Khazad-dum: it didn't have enough space to get up the thrust it needed to take off. Not crouching, but slouched, bad posture, bent over, whatever you want to call it (i.e. not fully erect).
