I was having a discussion with someone about when and where Aragorn used the alias 'Thorongil'. I insisted that though he served in both Rohan and Gondor, it was only stated (in the Appendices) that he was known in Gondor as Thorongil. My friend insisted that the Appendices stated he used the alias in both countries. So I pulled out three different versions of The Lord of the Rings, and sure enough! there was a disparity. Both Ballantine versions, in Appendix B 'The Tale of Years' said simply 'He served in disguise'. But the Houghton Mifflin version added 'As Thorongil'. Does anyone know why these versions are different, and which version should be considered the more accurate? Any information or explanations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron Kittle The Barrow-Downs
