: I too thought that the other person might be refering to the : SILMARILLION account, but, when I mentioned that, she was quite : clear in that she understood my reference was to UT and that is : what she meant to.: The debate is interesting. Someone said the FoG Legolas was the : same as the LotR Legolas and the other party corrected this by : stating that the (LotR) Legolas was Sinda and the Sindar did : not live in Gondolin as it was a Noldorin Realm. I cited the : reference to the Sindar gaurding the 3rd Gate and that they : were from Nevrast. She essentially said that CT rewrote the : account so that it was not valid, and in any event the Sindar : of Nevrast are actually Tatyar Avari anyways and also those : Sindar of Hithlum (the Mithrim) are Telerin Avari (of course : since by definition the Teleri can't be Avari I presume she : actually meant Lindarin/Nelyarin Avari) and has been cite from : 'Quendi and Eldar' to attempt to prove (unsuccessfully IMO) her : point. The Legolas of "The Fall of Gondolin" is not the Legolas of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Tolkien merely reused the name (he did this quite often) for a later story. No Avari ever reached Nevrast (the farthest west they got in the First Age was the southeastern part of Doriath, unless a few actually made it to Menegroth). Gondolin's people were of mixed Sindarin/Noldorin blood. Voronwe himself is half-Sinda, his mother being related to Cirdan in some unnamed fashion. The only mention of Nevrast in "Quendi and Eldar" is a reference to the mixed Sinda/Noldo parentage of Pengolodh, who was born in Nevrast. : She has just said that by comparing the Lost Tales 'FoG' and : UT 'Tuor' and some other narratives it can be determined that : CT added in the whole story of Tuor's fostering, and that by : comparing names to what they became later it is obvious that CT : changed them. She has still given no specific cite (or even : name). Still the analysis of the text is intriguing. Absolute rubbish. Anyone who wants to know what Christopher Tolkien need only read his explanation in THE WAR OF THE JEWELS. It's not like he was trying to hide something. The chapter on "Maeglin" explains a great deal about Christopher's methodology in updating the older stories for inclusion in THE SILMARILLION. "The Tale of Years" also provides some information. Tuor's fostering by Annael comes straight from J.R.R. Tolkien and no one else.
