If the Balrog of Moria had defeated Gandalf, and killed or captured the rest of the Fellowship (which it came very close to doing), what would it have done with the Ring? It is pretty clearly not a slave of Sauron, so it would not have simply have handed the Ring back to him. At the same time, the Balrog doesn't seem very interested in 'world domination', so it is hard to imagine that it would have tried to use the Ring to gather forces and attack Rohan, Sauruman, Gondor, and Mordor.
