: If the Balrog of Moria had defeated Gandalf, and killed or captured the rest of the Fellowship (which it came very close to doing), what would it have done with the Ring? It is pretty clearly not a slave of Sauron, so it would not have simply have handed the Ring back to him. At the same time, the Balrog doesn't seem very interested in 'world domination', so it is hard to imagine that it would have tried to use the Ring to gather forces and attack Rohan, Sauruman, Gondor, and Mordor.I think you've started from a false premise. How do we know the Balrog wasn't under Sauron's influence? Not only that, but the Ring was Sauron's, and sought it's maker. Unless the Balrog's will was stronger than Sauron's it would have succumbed to the corrupting influence of the Ring and become a slave of Sauron's (if it wasn't already) and handed the Ring over. My personal opinion is that the Balrog had little interest in the Ring, and would have left the orcs to handle the matter. His sole task was to defeat Gandalf. The others would have been easy prey.
