: In Gothmog's case, I would say that he would prefer to kill than to command. All Balrogs were tough foes because their only talent (if it can be called so) is in fighting - whereas Sauron, Saruman, and Morgoth all had skills in forgery, spellcasting and other areas, but not much in fighting. Gothmog was sutable to be given leadership of the Balrogs because it would be most acceptable to the Balrogs that their commander was like them. Also keep in mind that Gothmog was more powerful than the average Balrog, so he probably used some of this power in a sense of command. Not to mention that Balrogs took a form that would be beneficial in fighting, as opposed to commanding.I beg to differ: Balrogs had more talents than fighting: in Moria, when Gandalf tried to seal the backdoor of the Chamber of Mazarbul, he found himself faced with a serious threat: "I have done all that I could. But I have met my match, and have nearly been destroyed." And later: "What it was I cannot guess, but I have never felt such a challenge. The counter-spell was terrible. It nearly broke me." This is Gandalf speaking. That Balrog would seem to be a first rate sorceror, if you ask me (which you didn't, it's just an expression.) : Maedhros
