: : Moving the Master-Stone would have been difficult. I worked out once that if it was five feet in diameter and made of a glasslike material having a specific gravity towards the maximum end of glass's range (and the palantiri are described as being heavy for their size), then it would have weighed about 8 tons. Of course it was perfectly spherical, so if it started to roll you wouldn't want to be in its way!: : I was wondering is the Master-Stone the only one that is that large? The others are smaller and able to be held in the hands, right? Tolkien says that the lesser Stones (i.e. the Anor-Stone, Ithil-Stone, Orthanc-Stone, Annuminas-Stone and the Elendil-Stone in Elostirion were about 1 foot (30 cm) in diameter. He says the other two were "much larger and could not be lifted by one man." See UT p. 409. Five feet diameter is my guess for the Master-Stone and three feet for the Sul-Stone.
