And yet, in Tolkien's mythos, there are quite a few occurences of superior beings "lording over" lesser beings. Morgoth, of course, for one. Sauron did it, off and on, for three Ages of the World. He must have positively got off on the concept, LOL. I could also point out the Melian co-ruled over the Elves of Doriath. And let's not forget Sauruman.

So it's seems not to have been entirely unfashionable for a superior being to rule lesser ones in Arda. Still, it doesn't seem to have been the Balrog of Moria's cup of tea.
