: To me, the more interesting question about pointed ears is not : whether Tolkien's elves had them, but rather whether PJ's : elves should. I think the majority of respondents in our Web poll last year said they wanted pointed ears on Jackson's Elves. Does that mean they SHOULD have pointed ears? I have no idea. : In other words, assuming for these purposes that Tolkien's : elves have normal ears, should PJ honor that? I personally : don't think so. While I'm against any changes to the story : line, I support PJ's use of visual cues, even non-doctrinal : ones (e.g., pointed ears, floppy feet, etc.) to let the viewer : tell the races apart. Maybe the people of Middle Earth could : tell the Elves by the "twinkle in their eyes," but we movie : viewers sure as hell won't be able to. In short, making a : movie is different than writing a book. While it was enough : for Tolkien to just TELL us who was an elf and who was not, PJ : doesn't have that luxury. Well, my response to all the changes (even the ones I don't like) is that Peter Jackson is telling HIS version of the story, and he is free to tell it as he pleases. We will either enjoy the result or we won't. I find pointed ears on the Elves in the movies to be less annoying than some other (much clearer) departures from Tolkien, such as the pod-derived, plate-armored Uruk-Hai. But, say "la vee" (or, c'est la vie).
