: : : I find pointed ears on the Elves in the movies to be less : : : annoying than some other (much clearer) departures from : : : Tolkien, such as the pod-derived, plate-armored Uruk-Hai. : : : But, say "la vee" (or, c'est la vie).: : : : Sorry, what is that about Pod-derived armour? : : J. : The "Pod-derived armour" is nothing, Jan! Michael mentioned : that orcs in movie are derived from pods, and second, about : armour: in film we see Uruks armed with plate armour, when in : LOTR we don't have any plated armours (except one place, when : Tolkien describes armour used by Haradrim; and it is not real : plate armour: something like old Roman Lorica Segmentata). I don't recall this. However, you're correct about what I was referring to. According to E! Online's Force of Hobbit, Saruman's orcs (Uruk-Hai) are bred in pods, and when they emerge they have plate armor (metal, not leather) bonded to their bodies, or something strange like that. It appears that Peter Jackson lifted this idea from a suggestion Tom Shippey made in THE ROAD TO MIDDLE-EARTH for how the Orcs could be visually depicted as being completely evil (or the product of pure evil) -- which, of course, goes against what Tolkien said about good and evil....
