Obviously, the thing can't fly itself so I am guessing that the Stormtroopers (along with the TIE Fighter pilots) had been told to let them escape.

And this proves that the Stormtroopers were told to be bad shots? There is no evidence for this either way. The point stands.

: However, I can find no real explanation for Stormtroopers in some kind of advanced body-armour being killed by an Ewok hitting them on the helmet with a stone. Any takers?

Ummm, the Ewoks used an incredibly dense stone that had the ability to send shockwaves through plastic-alloyed body armor, thus causing internal hemoraging and ultimately death?? ;)
