: Sam may not have been actively spying in the years between the Long-Expected Party and the time when, as Merry says, "things got serious", but he would have been well-positioned to observe the goings-on at Bag End, particularly the comings and goings of Gandalf.: Once "the conspiracy was joined in earnest" they might very well have pumped Sam for all he could recollect about those meetings. snip Agreed. However, the difference here is that at one point Sam was simply doing his job, though he may have seen or heard things in Bag End, he certainly wasn't spying at that point, as it served no purpose, and Sam wasn't the sort to spy just for it's own sake. His reaction at his unmasking shows that he wasn't comfortable going behind Frodo's back. -RR
