I've just been re-reading the chapter called 'Strider' and one thing has struck me - I think someone else has picked up on this before, although i'm not sure.. why does Aragorn go around the dangerous wilds of Eriador with nothing more than a broken sword for protection? Unless he was the ultimate barefisted fighter, wouldn't it be a bit daft for the heir of Isildur to walk around with virtually no protection? There is no mention of Aragorn being armed otherwise - there is even a point that says Narsil was concealed at his side, hence the hobbits not seeing it..
So why? Unless he had his own hidden bodyguards of Rangers who followed him about, keeping under cover... Perhaps that was the true persona of Bill Ferny - He was under 'Deep Cover' - so deep in fact that he forgot he was....
N.B - To all those with no sense of humour - that last part was merely a gentle jest...
