: We are not told (IIRC) just where the blade is broken. Thus there may have been a significant protion of the blade which remained usable. It is also conceivable that "Strider" used other weapons, but knowing that he was being called to Rivendell, Gandalf may have instructed him to bring the broken sword for re-forging.: -RR IIRC, the text mentions that the blade was broken about a foot from the hilt. Strider even wryly comments to Sam that it's not very useful, but that it will soon be forged anew. He must have had some other weapon, but it is never described.
