: : I think each character is very important to the plot. Tom
: : Bombadil didn't have a huge effect in the story either. Or at
: : least he had about what Legolas has, and I think Tom's
: : character is still really cool.

: Bombadil has a tremendous impact on the story. Merry cannot kill the Witch-king without him, Pippin and Merry cannot bond with Treebeard without him, Frodo isn't prepared to accept the journey over Sea without him, etc. Bombadil is felt throughout the story, right up until the very end.

Plus the fact that they would have failed utterly and been slain by wights without him - and he himself would have been 'last as he was first' as Sauron trampled the floor with them all.
Then of course, the Valar would (ITS TIME, ONCE AGAIN!, like the Godfather)have to lay down their Guardianship and get the big fella involved.
He does more than he gets credit for in his 2 chapters.......
