: So, I thought I'd give people a few hours to share what they think of Gil-galad. What sort of king do you feel he was? Do you have an impression of his personality at all?

I've always wanted to know when he changed his name from Ereinion to Gil-Galad, and why.

As for what kind of king he was, he was the last High King of the Noldor in ME, and as such, a holdover from the First Age. He's the first High King to be free from the Doom of Mandos.

His friendship with the Numenorians seems to indicate that he is wise and noble, loyal and valiant.

His valor extended to going off to a war he knew he would not come back from; the Last Alliance.

I don't know the origins of his spear, Aiglos. But Gil-Galad by all accounts was a mighty warrior, as well as a king.

Gil-Galad doesn't seem to wage war due to rage or revenge, but only as a last resort to protect his people (and his friends).

Well, there's a few thoughts to set the pot boiling, LOL!
