below people are arguing about whether Gandalf had spoken to Treebeard or not before he met merry and Pippin, and from this whether gandalf helped rouse the Ents etc. Poor Pippin has come into bit of a character bashing.
So - how about this??
If you all would care too look at the chapter Flotsam and jetsam (and no talking at the back, thankyou) you will see that (I can't remember if it is Merry or Pippin, and I haven't got the book in front of me!) mentions the meeting between gandalf and Treebeard in front of Isengard on the night of the battle. One of the Hobbits surmises that Treebeard was loitering around the gate waiting for Gandalf, and treebeard himself isn't suprised by his appearance, he seems to expect it.
Therefore treebeard must have either met gandalf or at least have had proir knowledge of him ( which raises the new question by whom?).
So there you go. easy!
