: : : Therefore treebeard must have either met gandalf or at least : : : have had proir knowledge of him ( which raises the new : : : question by whom?). : : : : : : So there you go. easy!: : Thank you very much, but this was stated at the beginning of : : the thread, and lead to the 'Pippin-bashing'. We are far : : beyond this point in the discussion, and you have settled : : nothing. If you have further opinions on the discussion in : : progress, why not join it? : I have not read the other Treebeard thread, and actually don't have time to delve into it, but I hope someone pointed out that Treebeard told Merry and Pippin he had seen Gandalf in the forest but that they had said nothing to each other. Treebeard said nothing of the kind! How can you even suggest that? : Treebeard knew Gandalf was alive but he got all his news from Merry and Pippin until he was able to speak with Gandalf at Isengard (at which time Gandalf revealed some things to Treebeard that the hobbits hadn't, though Tolkien doesn't say what the wizard told him). The thread was originally called "What did Treebeard know, and when did he know it" because I was suggesting that Gandalf and Treebeard had spoken several days before the hobbits arrived, and this conversation was the basis of Treebeard's resolve to call an 'entmoot'.
