: : : below people are arguing about whether Gandalf had spoken to Treebeard or not before he met merry and Pippin, and from this whether gandalf helped rouse the Ents etc. Poor Pippin has come into bit of a character bashing.

: There has been no Pippin "character bashing". I was pointing out that Pippin, prior to his encounter with Sauron through the palantir is rather naive about the world around him, and thus, his statments may be suspect, though not a falsehood from Pippin's point of view. All of the hobbits are rather naive from the begining of the book. That's not "character bashing" that's simple characterization. The growth of each hobbit is an important aspect of LOTR.

Why would Pippin's innocence make his statements suspect? Rather, he shows perception in realizing (in hindsight) that Treebeard knew or suspected that Gandalf was alive.
