I think we are missing the point here, which was in response to your statement (way down below) "Pippin mentions that he thought that treebeard had seen him earlier."

To which, I have offered, that Pippin may not be the best set of eyes upon which wrap cigars around. He is very naive, very curious which may have colored what he saw or what he thought he saw. That's the only point that I was making. It doesn't matter a whit if Merry is more or less naive or curious then Pippin or not.

Finally, this argument is about whether or not Gandalf spoke with Treebeard prior to their meeting in Isengard, which you have offered Pippin as a credible witness, and whom I don't think he is one, whether of not he got it right. ;)
