: Well, as I've pointed out in my other reply, I misremembered a couple of passages. But Gandalf says he and Treebeard did not speak. I don't know if that will suffice or not to settle the question. I don't see how Gandalf could have had a hand in rousing the Ents, though. Treebeard got all his information from Merry and Pippin (except whatever Gandalf told him later at Isengard).

The question remains: What was Gandalf doing in Fangorn forest (a minimum of) two days prior to the arrival of Merry and Pippin?
