: Recovering from a battle with evil can be a very difficult thing. You get the feeling that the "Light of Aman" which is dimmed in the faces of the wood elves has been dimmed by their endurance of the darkness of the world. Similarly, in the Silmarillian, Shelob the spider drinks the vats of light from the trees and spins out darkness. Darkness tries to quench light, and the Light has to give out a lot of energy to defeat the darkness.: So, you could really say that Gandalf is not at all, "doing nothing." He is actively re-charging his "batteries." Light is his specialty, and he has to re-connect with his spiritual source in order to be ready for the next encounter with the dark. This is what is mentioned a few times as the "the cost" or the price that is paid. : Victory never comes cheap. : A few thoughts offered in the spirit of mutual inquiry. : Best wishes.
