: In the book, he was based in England as were most of the other characters. His fair maiden (I can't recall her name) was the daughter of a nobleman. Her father didn't approve of their relationship and she was looking to marry someone of adventure and fame. Hence the motivation for young-fella-me-lad to go on the safari.

Her name was Gladys (as in Lake Gladys, the Lost World body of water he named for her, and later renamed Central Lake, hee hee). I recall no mention of her father being a nobleman. And she married some weasly little accountant or something while he was gone, because he'd left her seeking adventure, which she'd goaded him into doing in the first place. Sigh.
