: Why is everyone picking on poor Ned. If you must throw someone to the wolves or raptors make it the writers. Malone & Roxton's relationship is big brother/little brother. Roxton is a lot younger then Challenger & Summerlee, he needs someone closer to his own age to hang with. Being the great hunter, dosen't help much when your stuck with a pair of science geeks. Malone is the answer to Roxton's male bonding dilemma. While Challanger & Summerlee are dithering about the flora & fauna or Margaurite & Veronica are engaged in yet another one of their verbal cat fights, the boys can go off hunting or fishing & tell each other war stories around the campfire. Roxton has someone to look up to him & teach things to, Malone has someone to look up to & learn from. : Tess Donaghy : : : Or maybe he could be killed by a creature that burrows mine shafts and looks like a pizza. "We found these nodules deep in the rock, unlike anything we've ever seen before. Pure silicone..." Good point, Tess. I hadn't thought of it that way. I was going through some old video tapes and stumbled upon the last 45 minutes of "Nectar" (I tape it because the show comes at an inconvenient time). This was the show where Ned, Roxton, and Veronica are trying to steal some "royal jelly" from the queen of a hive of giant bees. Anyway, the main storyline is that the trio wander around inside the giant beehive. In this episode it does become apparent that Malone is the apprentice to Roxton. So it looks like Malone serves a purpose after all - to be the goofy little brother that (a) sometimes gets in trouble and has to be rescued and (b) to serve as an audience for Roxton and the others when they explain their plan of action, which helps explain the storyline for the benefit of the viewers. And you're right. From a personality perspective, Roxton would get lonely without Malone around to keep him company. Enjoy!
