Alienating sci-fi with bold ideas

: : The problem with The Nanny and Moonlighting, is that the core focus of the series was on the sexual tension. Everything else was just window dressing. Therefore, when the tension ended, so did the interest in the show.

: I think Farscape can escape that curse. The core of Farscape is the search for Home - it is what drives everyone on the ship. Even Aeryn, who has been exiled, is looking for a place to belong.

: My belief is that if they take the romance slowly, and not make it the focus of episodes, it will work. Even in tonights ep. it was just a part of the whole - not the main course. I think ignoring it would be a mistake - it will lead to the frustration that many X-Files fans are now feeling after almost 7 years.

: The writers on Farscape are very talented, and I believe in their ability to create a romance in a TV series that will work. I think that by "breaking the ice" so early in the series, they can avoid many of the pitfalls series like The Nanny, Moonlighting, and even Lois and Clark fell into.

: I want to see John and Aeryn together. I think it would be refreshing to have an actual relationship in a SF series, more or less any TV series. I have gotten very tired of the "will they or won't they routine." It has been so over done.

I to agree that the presence of a true relationship would be utterly refreshing television in this day and age. My fear is that it won't be refreshing too long. The general public is quite resistant to change in "media formulas". But there are a growing number of people, myself and many other sci-fiers included that seek the formulas to be broken, new ground discovered, and old habits destroyed. I believe the time is coming (emphasize coming) where the public will not only watch the unique formulas that Farscape has the potential to develop, but appreciate them as well. I believe the the first half or 2/3 of this season will be spent trying not to alienate (no pun intended) tradition sci-fi formulas while establishing the fresh uniquenes of the show. After that point, FS would have "paid its dues" so to speak to the sci-fi community and be free to show the unique and refreshing relationship that you teresa, I and all of us faithful Scapers dream about happening.
