Posted by Tony Rowland on July 17, 1999 at 15:24:12 I woke up this morning and happened to catch the latest episode of Farscape. I threw in the usual tape (I've got all the eps now, I think) and was expecting a typical episode. Now, my expectations for Farscape are high - I expect this show to go quite far - but the episodes to date have been only promising, and had not yet realized their full potential. With some exceptions, the shows have been entertaining, but still lacking in...something. Today, it had that...something. I was extremely impressed with today's episode. The scenes between Ben and Claudia were remarkably well done, the story was tightly woven, and the humor, drama and pathos were all played effectively off each other. The whole "female of the species" motif was effective and funny (but I did think that Crichton's dying-and-CPR schtick was too reminiscent of "The Abyss", though I see how it related well to the rest of the story.) The beginning really paid off for me. I thought for sure that Zahn was going to kill Rygel. That whole sequence was very well played and established quite a bit about the tensions inherent in the series, as well as some of the character interactions that had only been hinted at thus far. I expected there to be some sexual tension in the story, but I didn't expect it to pay off. Up to this point, the seeds had been planted, but the sprouts had yet to...sprout. The whole frantic foreplay thing was unexpected, funny and clever. The ending, as everyone has noted thus far, was taut, funny and revealing. Overall, this is what they will call "classic" Farscape.
