Farscape ForumA human ReactionJim Henson's Farscape |

Posted by Mark on September 03, 1999 at 19:43:33 Let me start by saying that I really liked "A Human Reaction." The insights and character development offered by the aliens' illusion were very cool. It's just that I love science fiction a lot (especially "Farscape") and I love thinking about the many concepts being explored - maybe a little too much, sometimes. So, hang on because I'm about to reveal to you my desperate need for a life. I'm not sure how accurate the aliens' test is. It seems too subjective to offer a lot of useful information. The illusion is constructed entirely from one person's thoughts and memories. Everyone in it was someone John knew and every magazine was one he had seen before. The Aliens didn't even try and extrapolate what it might look like in the ladies room. Everything in it is really an extension of John's perspective on the world. There're approximately six billion people on the Earth. How many of them have John met? Those he has are seen in the illusion through his eyes. What's really being tested, then? The test seems better designed to discover what John's thoughts are on humanity, not necessarily humanity itself. Would humanity actually greet the aliens so violently, or is that how John thinks they will? Having said all that, I think it's cool that the illusion is based on John's perspective. It gives us some insight into his character and, as a writer, I think that's great. While I think John is insightful, I'm not sure it would be a good idea for the aliens to base this important decision on such a limited experiment. They're doesn't seem to be a control group or any room for repetition. Of course, the aliens never said they were being scientific about it (or did they?). I welcome your thoughts and comments. Maybe there's a story point I overlooked, or maybe even something within the scientific method. Take care, Mark
