Because at some point the pronunciation changed and not the spelling. Why did Peking become Bejing? Because china decided to rename the capital so that the spelling matched the pronunciation. Why did Vaqero become Buckaroo? Because the people who encountered them couldn't speak spanish. : Edna gatta na vita, (You know Iron Butterfly's 70's rock and roll?) was actually "In the Garden of Eden" but the singer was so stoned he slurred the words. Actually, *grin* it's only the translation of the Sabacean (excuse the spelling) language through the translator microbes, btw, are all Sabaceans PKs?
