Matala was definitely surgically altered. That was how they figured out the ship coming to meet them was Scorvian not Ilanic. D'argo told Zhaan that unaltered Scorvians looked very different from Ilanics and so if the ship refused to make visual contact then they must be hiding their appearance. When the approaching ship said that they were having trouble with their view screen it gave away their true identity.
