: While certainly not *deep*, I've noticed how Tolkien portrayed the miller's in the "Hobbit", "LOTR" and also "Farmer Giles of Ham" as rather annoying to the positive central characters. Tolkien must've known a conniving, rascally miller at some time in his life. :-) LOL! On the serious side, do any of you have some other character similarities that transcend more than one Tolkien work? I believe there are many, at least superficially.

He does refer to a mill and miller from his childhood somwhere, but I think he denies any influence on his characters.

All of Tolkien's heroes have fatal flaws. Even Bilbo does. None of them are able to accomplish their missions without help, either. He was creating epic characters in the ancient northern tradition, of course, and they should share many similar features/characteristics from a story-telling point-of-view.
