Technically speaking, the story of the struggle against Sauron was much greater than the story of THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The book covers only a part of the vast history, and the other two wizards had either already failed by then or were so far to the east that their activities had no impact on the efforts to destroy the ring. In a very late writing published in THE PEOPLES OF MIDDLE-EARTH Tolkien suggested the Ithryn Luin may have helped the cause by reducing the amount of resources available to Sauron in the east. But generally speaking most fans are influenced by the essay published in UNFINISHED TALES which indicates they failed of their purpose and ultimately founded "magic" cults. Michael
