: About a year ago (or whenever I saw it), I went to see Dragonheart. I walked out feeling that someone would now try to pull off a LotR film, due to the dragon special effects (which were amazing if you haven't seen it). Now it sounds like Miramax may take a stab at it, even though they're affiliated with Disney which J.R.R. specified in his will to avoid like the Black Breath. : In keeping an eye on the rumors, I read a few things that disturbed me to the core. First, that due to "homosexual undertones" Sam's character may have to become a female. Second, Miramax is considering making Gandalf a female. : I'm not trying to sound like a chauvanist, but this bothers me. How could they even consider this? I understand the reasons why, but couldn't they just stick to the story? If this occurs, not only will I boycott the film, but I may consider picketing. : If they do put the story into production, I hope they try to make 3 films, because even 2 would create a scenario where they'd have to edit too much out. : I think we all probably feel negative pangs against the concept of making this film for a variety of reasons. My number one reason is that I have a pretty specific idea in my mind what each character looks and sounds like, and to have it personified by and actor or actress will dilute that imagery. : HOWEVER, just for fun, who would you think would be ideal for the different roles. I mean, if they're making a film, we can't do much to stop them, so think about who might make it a little less tough to take: : Gandalf: Sean Connery is the no-brainer for me, but I've heard that Nick Nolte may be in the mix. I suppose his aging face (plus makeup) and deep raspy voice might make it bearable. : Tom Bombadil: If he were about 4 inches taller, Robin Williams could pull this off, in my opinion. Also., the guy that played Harrison Ford's sidekick ("Sala?") in the Indiana Jones films might do. Unfortunately, I think the whole Bombidil portion of the story would get edited out of a screenplay. : Saruman: How about Gary Oldman? He's such a brilliant villain, with some make up, he'd be awesome. : Hobbits: No idea how they'd pull them off. : Aragorn: Toughie...the aforementioned Nolte has that weathered look, but they'd have to darken his features. : Who else? If you're appalled at me for even raising the topic a) sorry and b)get over it. ;-) I too am pessimistic about it being a good movie. I would like to see it be the first movie to stick to the book. If so it would be great, there are a lot of openings for cool special effects and great battle scenes. Here are some of my choices for actors: Gandalf: Either Charlton Heston or Kirk Douglas would be perfect, Sean Connery would be OK though. Aragorn: No idea. Connery wouldn't be bad. Denethor: Patrick Stewart Hobbits: probably some midgets. the guy who played 'Willow' would make a good Sam Gamgee.
