This is becoming pretty indepth. Let me answer something I am positive on first. Goldberry is the servent of Ulmo, one of the Valar. He is the Lord of the Waters. She was sent to Middle Earth by him to watch over it's rivers and lakes. You might even call her a Maia, but the Silmarillion just refers to her as a lesser good spirit. Now.....as far as you saying what Elrond said about him being first born or first living thing....that is all very inaccurate. Unless Elrond is infact stating that Tom Bombadil is one of the Maiar. Because except for the Valar and the Maiar nothing was born before the Elves were. So even if my source books are wrong, than the actual words of Tolkien themselves prove my theory of his being a Maia right. Elrond said he was the oldest and first born......So be it. That makes him a Maia. Because no living creature (outside of plants) were aloud to live before the Elves were made or born. (that is why they are called the firstborn). That was the law of Eru and Manwe in The Silmarillion which I have checked before writing this response. So that leaves 3 options according to Tolkien himself...actually 4. Bombadil is either: Maia-----Valar-------Plant-------or Elf. So which do you think he is? He can't be one of the Valar. That is out of the question. He definately is not a plant (i mean look at him). He is far two magical and powerful for an elf(+ had he been an elf Elrond would have known) so that only leaves one thing: Maia. I rest my case. Please tell me what you think of the presented evidence and if you now agree. Gandalf
