: I am doing a project on Tolkien....I am going to focus on how he saw the world around him and how it affected his life, in turn affecting modern literature. : if anybody has anything interesting to offer about his life, or possibly some way to contact anybody close to Tolkien. : Any information would be helpful.

: Thanks, : Richard

JRR Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic who despised Allegory-he himself claimed that he never intended to write Allegory when he wrote his books, but so much of his Catholic faith and personal beliefs naturally flow out into his story when you examine the emphasis placed in them-love, friendship and self sacrifice victorious over overwhelming evil and incredible odds. We see in Gollumn and Boromir examples of what happens when give ourselves over to the voice of evil and greed. Gollumn is like the drug addict who could never bring himself to break free of his evil. We see what the power of love can do in the midst of despairing evil and how loyalty, friendship and sacrifice conquer in the end. We see the arrogance of Saruman and Sauron and how pride goes before a fall. His beliefs were solid Christian beliefs, not just a personal philosophy, but he never tried to be deliberate about putting them into his story-he even told his friend C.S. Lewis once that he was too blunt. C.S. Lewis was another fantasy writer whose Christian beliefs came out so wonderfully in his children's fantasy "Chronicles of Narnia" and "The Space Trilogy" ("Perelandra", "Out of the Silent Planet" and "That Hiddeous Strength") He also claimed he was not writting Allegory, but again, his personality and beliefs naturally came out in his writting.
