The White CouncilWas Feanor Evil?Tolkien and Inklings Discussion |
|
Posted by Padster on June 23, 1998 at 09:03:40 I don't know about you guys, but it seems to me that Feanor was one of the most unfortunate of all the children of Eru! 1) He creates the Silmarills, which are immediately coverted by some big hard Valar, 2) His dad cops a big mace in the head (Grond) weilded by said Valar, 3) The rest of the dilitory, unsympathetic hard nuts (the rest of the Valar with the possible exception of Aule) refuse to stop said Valar (OK Orome and Tulkas wanted Melkor bad, but Manwe just wouldn't have it. How can a supposid god-like know-it-all be so dense) from rampaging and doing whatever he wants, and 4) The all powerful Valar, refuse Feanor permission to follow the evil one and exact suitable revenge! Now... Oh also, 5) The Valar also require of Feanor for him to surrender his prized creation in order that they can be broken to refull the Light of the Trees. Now, I would say that he had quite a case to be juuuust a little peaved with those Ainur and their nastly little brother! Think about it! What would you do if some group demanded you knock your house down cause they wanted the clay you have made your bricks from, back to refill their quarry, after you had spent years making your lovely hovel, then one of your relatives was squished and the perp, burned down your house after having stole all your most prized possessions. You'd want his hide for a door mat - right! Therefore I don't think Feanor was EVIL! Merely angry enough to give up his home for justice! OK some of his actions thereafter were to say the least, somewhat overzealous, but then he wasn't exactly in a reasonable state of mind, and he was after all a Noldor, the lords of arrogance! Thoughts? Padster This is meant to be somewhat biased, but then opinions like this usually produce the best discusions.
