: : : : Curumo/Saruman: Aule : : : : Olorin/Gandalf: Lorien (I think - check UT) : : : : Aiwendil/Radagast: Yavanna : : : : Alatar and Pallando: Orome (probably - check UT) : : : :Who did the 7 Balrogs serve before they were corrupted, or were they always Morgoth's Mair. : : Does it say anywhere that there were only 7? : : My personal theory was that the Balrogs (and also Arien) were originally Maiar of Melkor, but I don't have much to back that up. : :Yes it does say there were only seven(I cant remember where but it was a liable source), I remember reading that there were only 7, 2 were killed(I'm pretty sure by elven lords who also died in the process, the balrogs were known for those double deaths like the Balrog of Moria who took Gandalf down with him) and that 5 obviously fought in the War of Wrath(one of which was the Balrog of Moria) though it does not say if any others escaped Tolkien said "save for a few who hid themselves deep in the earth". Which leaves the remote possibility that another Balrog may have survived. who is Arien? Akronath posted the quote. I am still not convinced that there were only 7 Balrogs, I think just the quote about "save for a few" implies at least 15-20. I don't have much else to back this up though.
