: While I'm pretty dogmatic about Tolkien, I still think it should be British accents only. The language in which the story is written (stepping back from the history) is very British in terms of diction and tone (as I perceive it).

: What do you think?

: Along those lines, some thoughts of casting that I have had (even though Jackson apparently is going for no-names--which is good!)

: Aragorn--Ralph Fiennes or Gabriel Byrne (from Usual Suspects) : Denethor--Jeremy Irons : Gandalf--Pete Postlewaite or Ian McCllelan (whatever the guy's name from Richard III) : Boromir--Liam Neeson or Gabriel Byrne

: Any thoughts?

Hypothetical all-star casts are always so much fun, aren't they? Here are a few of my suggestions...

Gandalf: Derek Jacobi Aragorn: Gabriel Byrne would be good... Galadriel: Emma Thompson Denethor: Paul Scofield or Patrick Stewart (Stewart would also make a good Saruman) Boromir: how about Angus Macfadyen? (Robert the Bruce in "Braveheart") Arwen: Helena Bonham Carter

Like I said, this is fun, but I am glad that the cast will be mostly unknowns. (I know of a certain unknown actress who could play Eowyn! ;-) ) The thing about celebrities is that you end up seeing the actor as much as you do the character...

About the British/American thing: I don't think there's anything wrong with having American actors in the film, even if all my casting suggestions are British! (This is more of an indication of what kind of movies I watch.) I'd also favor a mix of accents, myself, as the characters of LotR certainly would have one. (We had a highly entertaining discussion on this topic a while back -- try imagining Gondorians with Boston accents... *vbg*)

This is sort of on topic: I've convinced my father to read LotR (he thinks it's great, btw), and one of his comments was this: he says the Orcs talk like Americans (i.e. no Britishisms)! (We're American, so don't think this is snobbery.) I thought this was pretty funny, actually... *g*
